Wang Zhu

Wang Zhu, graduated from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 2022 at Beijing. After graduation, she studied Mineral painting under the guidance of professors from China Academy of Fine Arts, In 2023, she entered the Royal College of Art to study Painting and currently resides in London.

In Zhu’s artwork, searching for natural materials suitable for painting and utilizing them effectively is an important aspect. Minerals and biological elements serve as her pigments, creating a natural connection with the environment in her pieces. Drawing inspiration from Asian art’s mineral pigment techniques, she creates her work based on this foundation.

Zhu’s work focusing on the themes of birth and existence. Apart from painting, she has a fascination with natural sciences, using the insights gained from studying to inspire her creation of a philosophy of life. Continuously depicting the smallest ecosystems in her pieces, microorganisms, algae, fungi, etc., serve as subjects for her paintings. She believes that these tiny life forms represent a simple form of life, possessing the most serene thoughts and a philosophy closest to simplicity.

In this work, I explore my perspective on microbial consciousness. I utilize various materials and patterns to represent different types of microorganisms. They are small, simple, and their consciousness is equally minute, yet closely akin to states of meditation and Zen philosophy.
